Abstract

The purposes of this study were to investigate the retention and caries prevention effectiveness of fissure sealant from 1993 to 1995 in 7-12 year old school children in Kyungsan County, Korea.
223 children who were consented by their parents were treated with light-cured sealant on the dental unit by one dentist. Status of DMFT, dental health capacity of permanent 1st molar, total retention, partial loss and total loss of sealant and carious and amalgam filled teeth after sealing were examined after 6 months, one, two and three years.
Data analyses were conducted using the SPSS/PC{ program. Differences in before and after sealing were compared by the student t-test and chi-square test. Corresponding p-values were considered significant at values < 0.05.
The obtained results were as follows:
The total retention, partial loss and total loss of sealant were 88.0%, 9.7% and 2.3% respectively after 3 months and 62.9%, 28.4¡Æ% and 8% after 27 months.
Caries preventive effect of the sealant was 35% after 27 months.
Caries prevalence after partial and total loss of the sealant body was 1.6% after 3 months and 5.2% after 27 months. The ratio of amalgam resoration appeared only 1.6% due to advanced dental caries.
The results obtained suggest that continuing efforts should be made to reduce the percentage of children with experience of caries and should be extended as a major project of the community dental public health program in Korea.
